Japan: First hearing in the trial of Sea Shepherd Captain Peter Bethune on charges that include obstructing the activities of the Japanese whaling fleet in the Antarctic Ocean.

South Korea: War veterans hold anti-North Korea rally.

China: Indian President Pratibha Patil meets with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Afghanistan: Taliban? have surrounded the Barg-e Matal and Kamdesh districts of Nuristan province and will be able to carry out attacks in other provinces if the government does not take action, some residents of the districts said, Tolo TV reported

Afghanistan: NATO hopes to reduce the governing power of the Afghan president's half-brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai, according to a top NATO commander. British Maj. Gen. Nick Carter, who leads NATO troops in southern Afghanistan, said he plans to strengthen Kandahar governor Tooryalai Wesa and downgrade the power of Karzai

Turkey: Kazakhstan and Turkey have the economic and political potential to promote energy, communication, and trade routes and create a new Silk Road between Europe and Asia, Turkish President Abdullah Gul told the Kazakh Parliament. Gul credited the completion of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway as an important step in recreating the Silk Road.

Yemen: Abeeda tribesmen in Yemen's Marib province agreed to a cease-fire with the Yemeni government, clashes began following a botched air raid that killed provincial Deputy Gov. Jaber Shabwani.

Gaza: Freedom Flotilla, an international coalition consisting of three cargo ships and five passenger boats carrying 5,000 tons of reconstruction materials, school supplies and medical equipment, as well as 600 passengers from more than 40 countries, including up to 20 European members of parliament, is due to dock in Gaza City. Israeli media say the boats will be impounded and passengers detained before they reach Gaza

Ethiopia: The Ethiopian opposition leader rejected the outcome in the recent parliamentary elections and demanded a new vote, Xinhua reported May 26.

France: French President Nicolas Sarkozy meets Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

France: Unions demonstrate in Paris against what they suspect are plans by the centre-right government of President Nicolas Sarkozy to ease pressure on national debts by raising the retirement age.

UK: Delayed vote in the constituency of Thirsk and Malton to elect a new member of parliament three weeks after the national poll on May 6th, due to the death of one of the candidates. Despite the Conservative and Liberal Democrat party being in formal coalition government together, they will both be fielding candidates and campaigning against each other.

UK: The maximum possible size of the United Kingdom's nuclear arsenal is 225 warheads, including operational and nonoperational weapons, according to a statement by British Foreign Secretary William Hague, The Financial Times reported

UN: To protest the “biased” nature of the U.N. Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinians, Israeli officials will not attend that organization’s two-day international meeting on the peace process in Turkey, The Jerusalem Post

US: Obama is expected to announce tougher safety requirements for off-shore oil drilling.
