China:

Nearly 5,000 state-owned enterprises in China have gone bankrupt each year since 2002, according to the former head of China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, Xinhua reported. Some of the enterprises that have gone bankrupt have been administered by the central government, according to Li Rongrong, the former commission head.

Afghanistan:

Afghanistan's central bank has taken control of Kabulbank after suspicions of irregularities were raised. Central Bank Governor Abdul Qadir Fitrat said investigations also had been launched into the bank's top two directors and shareholders as well as a brother of Afghan First Vice President Mohammad Qasim Fahim.

Kyrgyzstan:

Kyrgyzstan will consider deploying forces from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to the country's restive south sometime after parliamentary elections are held, an OSCE spokesman said in Bishkek

Pakistan:

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Mullah Omar, leader of the Afghan Taliban, is living in Pakistan, in Quetta, or possibly Karachi. He also said Afghan President Hamid Karzai was trying "to reach an agreement with the Pakistanis so that the international forces would leave Afghanistan as soon as possible."

Ethiopia's Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) militant group denied its fighters were present in Somaliland, contrary to the claims by the Somaliland army and police that 300 ONLF fighters had been surrounded after entering the region following training in Eritrea

Sudan:

The United States has offered Sudan a package of incentives if it resolves the outstanding issues over Darfur and the vote on Southern secession. The offer includes licences for agricultural machinery and the lifting of some trade sanctions

Italy:

Italian authorities seized $1.9 billion of Mafia-linked assets, the largest ever seizure against the Mafia, in an operation that showed the crime group was laundering money through alternative energy firms. The assets included at least 40 companies, hundreds of land parcels, factories, buildings, bank accounts, stocks, cars and yachts. Most of the assets were located in Cosa Nostra's home of Sicily and 'Ndrangheta's territory in southern Calabria.
